Many residential interior designers work on homes, transforming bedrooms and other spaces into stylish environments that reflect the homeowners’ personal tastes. They can help homeowners select furniture and other furnishings, create layouts and make suggestions for storage solutions that make the space more efficient.
The role requires a strong sense of visual creativity and an ability to work with a wide range of visual styles. A college program can offer a supportive environment in which to hone those skills.
Office Spaces
The structure of a workplace can be a big influence on employee productivity. Having designated workspaces that also include lounge areas allows employees to move around and work more efficiently. Keeping the work environment stimulating by incorporating different textures, colors and natural light will encourage creativity.
In a commercial setting, an interior designer must also consider airflow, heat and extraction as well as electrical and plumbing regulations. At a minimum, designers produce 2D and 3D interior design plans and drawings as well as mood boards to illustrate layouts (spatial planning).
Apartments
Apartment interior design requires a little more creative thinking than a single-family home. If you’re working with a limited budget, it’s important to devise clever apartment ideas that make the most of your space and accommodate your client’s lifestyle.
For instance, if your client is a home worker, consider creating a separate office in a corner by the window, like this example from Krsnaa Mehta. This way, you can still offer your client the privacy and quiet she needs to work but also provide a centralized location for entertaining guests or hosting an intimate dinner party.
